COVID-19 Safety Measures

In order to reduce the possibility of staff and clients becoming ill, and to mitigate the effects of a potential outbreak in the workplace, NARWAL has developed a detailed “INFECTIOUS DISEASE PREPAREDNESS AND RESPONSE PLAN to help guide protective actions against COVID-19, or any other infectious disease that could potentially be spread among clients and staff. NARWAL commits to stay abreast of guidance from federal, territorial and local health agencies, and consider how to incorporate their recommendations and resources into its workplace protocols.

EMPLOYEE SAFETY MEASURES

Strategy #1: Risk Identification

NARWAL is constantly working with staff to identify areas and activities that pose a risk to staff and clients, and to develop risk mitigation strategies.

Strategy #2: Infection Prevention

At NARWAL, protecting workers will emphasize basic infection prevention measures, including:

  • .           Promotion of frequent and thorough hand washing using liquid soap, and running water, or 60% alcohol-based hand sanitizers when water is not immediately available.
  • .           Encouraging workers to stay at home if they are sick.
  • .           Encouraging respiratory etiquette, including covering coughs and sneezes.
  • .           Allowing staff to work flexible hours where possible.
  • .           Allowing workers to work from home when possible.
  • .           Maintain regular housekeeping practices, including routine cleaning and disinfecting of surfaces, equipment, and other elements of the work environment, using appropriate products and chemicals for the task, and following manufacturer’s instructions.
  • .           Providing staff training in infection prevention measures, including how to use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and  other safety and sanitation equipment, and how to complete documentation.

Strategy #3: Monitoring

NARWAL will inform and encourage staff to self-monitor for signs and symptoms of COVID-19 particularly if they suspect possible exposure. Staff will be required to complete documentation to verify that self-monitoring is being done.

Strategy #4: Isolation

Any staff who report or exhibit any signs and symptoms will be immediately isolated from other staff and clients, and instructed to go home. They must call Public Health and follow their advice, which may include testing for COVID-19. Staff will be allowed to return to the work place as recommended by Public Health. All surfaces and equipment that were in contact with the potentially infected staff member will be disinfected.

CLIENT SAFETY MEASURES

Strategy #1: Risk Identification

As part of the registration process, clients will be required to complete and sign a registration form disclosing information regarding relevant health concerns, prescribed medications and treatments in effect, possible COVID-19 exposure, as well as emergency contact information. This information will be held in confidence by NARWAL staff.

As part of the registration process, clients will be provided with a COVID-related General Information Document which outlines NARWAL’s client prevention, monitoring and isolation strategies. Clients will be encouraged to bring to the attention of NARWAL staff any areas and activities that pose a potential risk to themselves, and will be welcomed to suggest risk mitigation strategies. This is very new to all of us and we value your input.

Strategy #2: Infection Prevention

NARWAL will encourage clients to exercise infection prevention measures, including:

.           Restricting cash transactions, encouraging electronic payment and forms submission.

.           Providing clients with tissues and trash receptacles.

.           Encouraging social distancing measures wherever possible.

.           Promoting frequent and thorough hand washing using liquid soap and running water, or 60% alcohol-based hand sanitizers when water is not immediately available.

.           Instructing clients to stay at home if they are sick.

.           Encouraging respiratory etiquette, including covering coughs and sneezes.

.           Arranging for distance learning activities where possible.

.           Documenting that clients have been properly apprised of safety protocols that are in place.

.         Providing a hand-sanitizer station at the office entrance and near rental equipment.

.           Providing a washroom facility for client use, which will be disinfected throughout the day.

.           Signage will be strategically posted, informing clients of established protective measures.

Strategy #3: Monitoring

NARWAL will inform and encourage clients to self-monitor for signs and symptoms of COVID-19 particularly if they suspect possible exposure.

Strategy #4: Isolation

Any client who reports or exhibits any signs and symptoms will be immediately isolated from other staff and clients, and instructed to contact Public Health and follow their instructions, which may include testing for Covid-19. The client will be allowed to return to the program as approved by Public Health.

All surfaces and equipment that were in contact with the potentially infected client will be disinfected. An Incident Report will be completed documenting the name of the client, symptoms exhibited, date and time the client was removed from the activity, as well periodic follow-up with the client until symptoms are resolved and client is permitted to return to the program. This information will be considered confidential.
